Hawaii, Part III: Helicopter Ride

My dad had been looking forward to our helicopter ride for months. He even requested that the doors be taken off the helicopter so we had an unobstructed view of the island. Sounds cool, right? It was. But it was also terrifying! Scarier than skydiving, no joke. I would skydive any day over going in that helicopter again.

Riding in a helicopter is completely different than airplane. In an airplane, you feel stable and secure. In that helicopter I felt like we would fall at any moment and like nothing was holding us up in the air. I felt like a feather on the wind and not in a good way. Thankfully, I was nestled in the middle between the pilot and Scott, packed in there like sardines. If I had been the one on the edge next to that wide open nothingness I think I might have lost my lunch. (Brittany almost did and was completely nauseous when she got off.) I held on to Scott for dear life, terrified he would take a tumble out of the helicopter and fall into a lava pit.

We twisted and turned and several times I had to hold in yelps of terror.
But the views were spectacular.
Wearing the earphones was awesome. I felt like I was in Top Gun.
We saw lava.
We saw Rainbow Falls.
We saw where lava seeps into the ocean creating great puffs of steam.
We saw macadamia nut fields.
We saw the ocean and coastline.
Simply stunning...and terrifying.
