Tuesdays Tell All: Pioneer Spirit

My great-great-great-great-great grandmother Elizabeth Barlow was kidnapped by Indians. Her family owned a farm. Her father was a good friend of the local Indian Chief. But there were still tensions between settlers and Indians. One day, Elizabeth and her brother were playing in a sunflower patch near the farm. Suddenly, a young Indian warrior sneaked up on them, grabbed Elizabeth, threw her into a potato sack, and rode off with her on his horse. Elizabeth's brother ran and told their father. He rounded up a few other men and they went in search of Elizabeth. They came to the Indian's camp and it was suprisingly, the friendly Indian Chief's tribe. The Chief was furious at the young Indian for stealing a good friend's daughter to make her a wife. A wife! Can you imagine!? I think Elizabeth was only about 10 years old. So the chief apologized and gave Elizabeth back.

I love that story. I think she was the first family "pioneer" to have a run-in with Indians. I wish I knew more about my ancestors. I know a few things, but it is my goal to learn more.

Oh my gosh! I would die. 10 years old that is sooo young!! That is an awesome story. You need to make sure your kids will know that story because that is pretty good

Hi Cristine!!
I'm so glad that I can keep up with you and Scott now! Your blog is adorable and I am having fun reading all about you guys. In one of your posts you were talking about Scott's soft earlobes-when he was a baby, his little head was so soft that I told my mom I wanted to cut it off and use it as a footstool because it felt so good. Gross huh, but hey I was young... Come and see us soon!
